Deontay Wilder’s Rise: 42 Fights Without Defeat

Wilder turned professional in November 2008, months after winning bronze in Beijing. He knocked out almost everyone in his way and won the WBC heavyweight title in January 2015 by outpointing Bermane Stiverne. He made ten successful defences, including two knockouts of Luis Ortiz, a first-round stoppage of Dominic Breazeale and a one-punch knockout of Stiverne in their rematch. He was unbeaten in his first 43 fights, with only the 2018 draw against Tyson Fury on his record.

What Wilder’s Record Says About the Opetaia Fight

The power is real. 43 knockouts from 45 wins is one of the highest rates in heavyweight history. Even in his comeback win over Tyrrell Herndon, Wilder dropped his opponent twice before the stoppage.

So is the decline. Wilder has gone the distance in two of his last four fights, which rarely happened in his prime. Against Parker and Zhang, the better boxers kept him from letting his right hand go. That is the blueprint Jai Opetaia, a fast southpaw, will try to follow.
